Actor-director Raj B Shetty has had a busy and eventful year, with multiple film releases and exciting upcoming projects on the horizon. His schedule has been packed, involving frequent travel between Bengaluru, Mysuru, and Kerala for shoots. Raj expresses his enthusiasm for this phase of his career, especially after gaining a substantial fan following in Kerala following his film "Turbo" with Mammootty. As a result, he has landed two more Malayalam film projects. Feeling incredibly occupied with work, Raj likens his current situation to being in a war zone. Despite the hectic schedule, Raj is fully immersed in his creative endeavors. He mentions working on various projects simultaneously, including producing a film, writing scripts for himself and other directors, and directing a multi-lingual web series. He is also juggling acting roles in different language films. Raj explains that his busy schedule does not hinder his creative process, as he plans and prepares for his roles well in advance. He utilizes any available downtime on sets for other creative tasks, such as collaborating with his music producer or writing. Raj emphasizes the importance of maximizing every minute for the creative process. Reflecting on the unpredictable nature of the film industry, Raj states that being open to any outcome is crucial when striving to make a quality film.Three films, Toby, Swathi Mutthina Male Haniye, and Roopanthara, received critical acclaim but failed to do well at the box office. The filmmaker acknowledges that he cannot compel audiences to watch his films. He expresses that he is not overly idealistic and does not expect viewers to watch all his work. Instead, he views himself as a continual learner. Anticipating the lukewarm response to Swathi... upon its release, he also predicted a better reception on OTT platforms. This prediction manifested similarly with the release of Roopanthara. Despite being a quality film, the content may not align with audience preferences for theatrical viewing. However, the film still saw success by running for three weeks in cinemas. The filmmaker emphasizes that in striving to create good cinema, one must be content with any outcome.
For an actor, the success of a film can yield considerable influence, providing the ability to venture into film production and share long-cherished stories. Raj B Shetty highlights the rapid production process prevalent in the Malayalam film industry. Amid the recent wave of successful Malayalam films, he sheds light on his approach to acting and his evolving focus on embodying characters while maintaining authenticity.
He notes the current obsession with the pan-Indian trend in filmmaking, remarking that labeling it a trend eliminates the notions of success and failure. Raj believes that the transient nature of trends calls for adaptability, cautioning that what may seem like success can sometimes turn out to be one's biggest failure. The desire to always create big films led to our failure. While big productions are important, they can be time-consuming. Instead of just focusing on big star-driven films that release every two years, we should also prioritize content-driven films that can sustain in theaters for 4-5 weeks and generate sufficient revenue for both theater owners and filmmakers. Unfortunately, such films are lacking in the industry due to a lack of initiative.
"Collaborating with Mammootty has been a valuable learning experience for me. Through our conversations, I received inspiring insights on how to approach a character physically, psychologically, and mentally. I feel more 'inspired' rather than 'taught' by him, as learning is an ongoing process. These interactions have fueled my passion for taking on diverse roles as an actor," he shared.
